Engineering scales in home design are generally used by the civil engineer or surveyor to draw the property / site plan. On each of these graphs, the darker grid is one inch. The lighter grid varies with the scale and represents one foot on the 1″=10′ scale and ten-foot increments on the other scales.
Smaller scales (1′ = 10′) are used for individual lots and site plans for single homes. Larger scales (1′ = 40′) are used more for subdivision plans, larger lots, etc.
