A civil engineer or surveyor generally uses engineering scales in home design to draw a property/site plan.  Each square represents one foot.  This scale is most commonly used for individual lots when you want the finished drawing on smaller paper.  The pattern is 10 squares per inch with a heavier sub-grid every inch (10′).
