A civil engineer or surveyor generally uses engineering scales in home design to draw a property/site plan.  Each square represents 10′-0″.  This scale is most commonly used for drawing multiple lots or large, multi-acre lots.  It is also a good scale for small subdivision plans. The pattern is three squares per inch with a heavier sub-grid every inch (30′)
